Název Antimodernisté není spekulativní, vyjadřuje jen prostý fakt, konstatování, že v logické posloupnosti existovali nejdříve modernisté a teprve po nich antimodernisté. Neexistovaly dvě skupiny, ale pouze jednotlivci, osobnosti více či méně výrazné - umělci, jejichž tvorba procházela nejrůznějšími peripetiemi a proměnami vývoje, v jehož rámci termíny moderní a nemoderní neměly nikdy platnost absolutní. Tradice moderny začala skandály již v šedesátých letech 19. století (Manet) a obdobně pokračovala, zejména ve století následujícím, kterému se s oblibou říkalo moderní. Do českých zemí přišla moderna s malým zpožděním, ale poměrně rychle zde zapustila kořeny. Mimo jiné vyvolala také nálady antimodernistické a tomu odpovídající uměleckou tvorbu, jež se žádnými modernistickými poučkami, dogmaty a manifesty neřídila. Kromě slavných jmen přináší kniha i ukázky výtvarné práce osobností málo známých. Upozorňuje na fakt, že ve slovnících, monografiích a učebnicích se od určité doby jako reprezentativní a důležité objevovalo především umění moderní. Poukazuje rovněž na zpolitizování umění a kultury, k čemuž dospěla avantgarda, nejagresivnější část moderny. Svět umění měl být rozdělen na část pokrokovou a reakční. Tato obrazová publikace se tak stává jedním z prvních příspěvků, jež se snaží s potřebným nadhledem vnést do uměleckohistorické literatury pohledy a soudy vyváženější a někdy i spravedlivější.
