In a town where there aren’t a lot of independent book stores, Church Street Coffee and Books in Birmingham, Alabama is a sweet little refuge where you can find your new favorite book – and enjoy one of the best cookies you’ll ever taste.
Church Street has a great selection of the latest literary treasures in their shop, but if they don’t have what you’re looking for, you can text them the book you want to order, and they’ll text you back when it arrives in the shop a few days later. It’s like having a friend that gets you your favorite books. And when you go to see that friend to get your book, you also get the world’s most amazing cookie (I promise to elaborate on this!). Emily and I spotted several #BookSquadGoals book selections when we visited Church Street together last year.
You can also order eBooks through Church Street and their partnership with Kobo. Every eBook they sell through Kobo, they split the profits with them 50-50, so you’re still supporting Church Street if you prefer to read on your phone or tablet. This is also a great option for non-Birmingham folks who want to support a great shop! Get a Church Street-linked Kobo account here. It’s quick and easy.
Church Street supports book clubs, and they’re happy to let your club use their space for meetings. There’s a reading room you can reserve for this, which is pretty awesome.
And let’s talk about their bakery and coffee for a minute. Church Street serves Octane coffee, some of the best coffee you can get in Birmingham (check them out in Atlanta, too!). And that bakery, though. All of Church Street’s bakery items (including that cookie I keep teasing) are made fresh right in the shop. They’ve got muffins, scones, cakes, biscotti and more. Plus, they’ve got vegan, gluten-free and cane sugar-free options available every single day.
This cookie get its own paragraph. Church Street is home to the Breakup Cookie, also known as the best chocolate chip cookie around. They are chocolatey, soft, and topped with salt. Believe me when I say you need to try one.
One of my favorite things about Church Street is the cozy environment. There are always friendly faces there, but it’s not your typical, loud coffee shop. It’s a great place to read, study, or just sit and enjoy that cookie. Plus, if you need absolute quiet, they’ve got a quiet room upstairs where you can go for some extra peace. There’s even a little reading nook for kids, so if you’ve got little ones, Church Street is a great place to go to get them reading!
If you’re in Birmingham, swing by and say hello to the friendly staff, find a good book, and settle in with an iced latte and a breakup cookie. And if you’re not in Birmingham, order your ebooks through Church Street and support this great local shop.
