In this installment of Are You the One, a lot happened and nothing happened at the same time. Yes, it's confusing for me, too. I don't really know what to make of the direction this season is going in. My big question is... I was assuming Episode 10 was going to be the last episode, but is it not? Are they not telling us whether it is or not because they don't want to spoil us? I need to know what is happening. Everything is so topsy turvy. We got a Match-Up Ceremony halfway through the episode, and then we ended up with a challenge with only 10 minutes left. So that means we got, like... a weird ending where they're about to go have a boat party but not yet. This is the cliffhanger? Next episode's boat party? I want to throw up my hands and quit, but I can't because this show obviously has my heart and my soul, for better or for worse.
So here we are. I guess let's break down what happened and stuff.
What is up, Are You the One fans? My people. I'm so excited to talk about this episode with you, and I hope by my conclusion (as much as recaps can have conclusions) you'll understand why. Not gonna even lie. Towards the end of this episode, I got so hyped up that I had trouble even taking intelligible notes, but I will try to see what I can do here. Especially because the format got all messed up again. Why, MTV, why can we not just have a Truth Booth and a Match-Up Ceremony in one episode? Is the Alexis/Keith/Alivia/Kareem drama SO IMPORTANT that we can't make room for a damn Match-Up Ceremony? Why?
But here I go. I'm going to do my best. Come along with me on a journey through this mess.
Did you think we were done with the Nurys/Malcom/DiDi love triangle just because Nurys and Malcolm were confirmed a no-match and then Nurys let some dude lick chocolate off her nipple? Think again, my friends. The trio we all wanted to forget is back and shit's about to get real.
But let's start at the very beginning. A very good place to start.
I have one word for this episode: FINALLY. Yes, finally Clinton and Uche are being sent into the Truth Booth after weeks of torturous speculation and anticipation. But more importantly, finally we're getting an episode in its NORMAL format. We start this episode with a challenge, then we go on a date, then we get the Truth Booth, and then finally we end with a Match-Up Ceremony. This is the moment I've been waiting for. I am a person who appreciates structure. Thank you, MTV, for giving me what I so desperately needed for this, the first normal episode of the season. It only took you six tries, but here we are.
So without further ado... let's break down what happened on this week's episode of the greatest show on television.
Aww yeah. It's the Lingerie Party episode. So, it's not that the Lingerie Party is an official thing that Are You the One does every season, but there's definitely at least one episode where these fools get almost completely naked and hook up with random people. Yes, okay, I know what you're thinking, Emily, isn't that kinda the premise of the whole show? And, okay, yes, touché, you are technically correct, but parties like this are where we get a lot of concentrated drama.
So let's dig into it, shall we?
Wednesdays are extremely long for me. I'm in class until 9:30pm, and by the time I get home, I want to curl up in a ball with my cat and my favorite blanket and never leave the house again. Are You the One is my favorite blanket, guys. It's the thing that brings me peace during times of stress and exhaustion. This show is here for me when I need it, comforting me at the end of the longest day of the week, providing me with a steady supply of joy every time I come to it, and bringing out the Truth-or-Dare-related drama just when things are getting a little too predictable.
What, your blanket doesn't play Truth or Dare with you? Girl, you need a new blanket.
Season 6, episode 3 of Are You the One continued to bring the drama, the break-ups, the humor, the drinking, the rapping to the ukulele... basically anything anyone could ever want in an episode. I absolutely did not mind watching this episode more than once to give you all my very deep and insightful analysis of this group of Instagram fame whores.
Seriously, guys, this show is so fun, but I do wonder how much brain power I'm wasting keeping all 22 of these contestants' names and relationship stats in my head. But, you know, it's worth it if it brings the readers a few minutes of joy. I do it for you.
Let's get into this, shall we?
Hi fam! It's the moment you've all been waiting for! My inaugural Are You the One Season 6 recap. I have yet to decide if this will be weekly or bi-weekly, so I guess we'll just wait and see how many feelings I need to express as the show goes on. But let's get this pirate party started.
So, first, I just want to apologize to all of the new Are You the One viewers who were promised a match-up ceremony at the end of every episode in my last post. Clearly that's not what is happening, and I have a theory about why; basically, every season, the cast has ten opportunities to find their perfect match on a ten week show. If the group finds their matches early, that means they have fewer match-up ceremonies to spread out over ten episodes. So the fact that we're two episodes in and have only had one match-up ceremony halfway through the second episode tells me that these kids are going to find their matches early, and I predict earlier than any other group has matched up before.
However! I also predict that in order to get there, they're going to have at least one blackout (meaning they get no new matches at a ceremony). In fact, because these guys are going to get their matches correct so early, there might be more than one blackout. The thing that's great about a blackout is it gives contestants a lot of information. Suddenly, they know that the person they're sitting next to cannot possibly be their perfect match, which really helps narrow it down. As a viewer, blackouts are also amazing because of all the drama! What, you mean this person I've been in love with for the past 14 hours is not my soulmate? HOW DARE YOU! The thing that is not so great about a blackout is contestants lose half of their money every time they get a blackout.
So, basically, my prediction is that this group is going to finish early, but with practically no money. We'll see how this unfolds in the upcoming weeks. I'm super excited to find out.
Let me break the first two episodes down a bit more for you.
At the beginning of this summer, we thought we would lose Bachelor in Paradise for at least the season, if not forever. Like many other viewers, when I saw the show was coming back against all odds and perhaps against better judgment, I jumped for joy. But now that BiP is back, I can’t help but feel like this season is a lackluster shadow of seasons past. This is the show we fought for? On top of that, ABC has just announced Arie Jr. as their next Bachelor, which is… fine, I guess. I don’t have a problem with Arie, but is a contestant from five years ago even relevant anymore? The Bachelor franchise is doing us wrong, people, and we deserve better.
Thankfully, better is coming on September 20th in the form of a fresh new season of MTV’s superior dating show Are You the One. Yes, that’s right. I said it. Are You the One is far better than Bachelor in Paradise. Actually, it’s the best dating reality show on television, and I’m here to tell you why. If you’re not already watching this gem on the show, you need to get on board now. What follows are my reasons you should forget about this boring Bachelor content and instead get hype for Are You the One!
