All ANTM fans know that the makeover – ahem, excuse me – Ty-over episode is one of the best of every cycle. 95% of the time, the model looks so much better after. Occasionally, there’s a really bad one (remember the beard weave?). But there’s always drama and always, always crying.
In her selfie mail (I’m calling it that now because it just looks like she shot it on her iPhone), Tyra tells the models they’re getting “trademark styles.” High fashion is the name of the game this season. She reveals their looks to them via selfie mail, and the only highlight here is when she says to pro-Trump Liberty, “You voted red, so you’re going red.” Cut to Kyla saying in her confessional that “Donald Trump is a f*cking asshole.” Again, I applaud the show and the network for highlighting these very different stances and not pretending these women live in some world where Trump doesn’t exist.
At first Liberty seems confused, and then she immediately starts crying. Because apparently red hair is the ugliest thing a person can have. *eye roll*
Rio’s like, “Girl, I’m getting my head shaved” to put things in perspective for Liberty, who cannot put things in perspective.
Christina and Brendi K. get in a dumb fight about…I don’t really even know what. General disrespect? I can’t pay attention to this.
SALON TIME. The models go to the famous Andy Lecompte Salon in Los Angeles for their transformations. Here’s what everyone got.
Coura gets “the Coura,” which means they think she’s #nextlevelfierce as-is and doesn’t need a Ty-over.
Rhiyan gets a suuuuuper long weave. I’m not really a fan.
Kyla goes brown, and it’s lovely, but not a huge change.
Jeana is struggling, and rightfully so. Her makeover requires her to remove her wig, which she thinks of as kind of a safety blanket, and embrace being bald. Since she has Alopecia universalis, she has struggled with hair loss both physically and mentally for most of her life. Law and Drew give her an awesome pep talk and encourage her to use this as a platform. They remind her how brave she is for doing this, and they are basically sweet angels. When she goes full-on bald, we can see she has a perfectly shaped head, and she. is. stunning.
Sandra gets a long, blunt bob. It’s meh. I mean, she beautiful either way. It’s just not that big of a change.
Christina gets “highlighter hair” which is apparently a thing Kylie Jenner did.
Liberty goes red, but it’s not even super red. It’s kind of a strawberry blondish red. It does look really good on her though.
Erin gets long, wavy hair and looks amazing.
Rio gets super short, platinum blonde hair, and it’s my favorite makeover besides Jeana’s. It’s perfect for her face, and she rocks it.
Ivana gets her natural hair cut shorter so it’s in a tighter afro. She’s nervous about it, but I think it looks great.
Liz gets bubblegum pink hair, and I love it. She calls it “a little more high-fashion and a little more bitchy.”
Khrystyana goes platinum, and it’s so beautiful on her:
Shanice was going to get a weave, but she tells the coaches about her psoriasis on her scalp, and they decide to forgo the makeover to keep her healthy. Instead, they work with her natural hair and make it a little more wild and free. It looks lovely, but she’s obviously bummed.
Brendi K. gets a buzz cut, and I really love it on her. Her facial structure is so strong, and she can work this hairstyle. She’s worried she looks too masculine though (she’s wrong).
To reveal their new looks to the world (and more importantly, to the panel), they models are making a “high-fashion video” with Director X, who has worked with Rhianna and Drake. As expected, some of the models absolutely nail this. And some of them just sort of fade into the background.
Liz is of course a little wild and crazy, but I’m still so into it. She says she looks like an “anime ballerina.” That’s pretty accurate, but I’d add the word “punk” in there somewhere.
Jeana looks so space-age and cool. She’s KILLING it.
Ivana struggles the most. She just looks really uncomfortable in her new look.
Liberty was the surprise of the day. She was fierce and giving some serious Kesha vibes.
Brendi K. gets all upset about being too masculine again, and Jeana is like, “Girl, I’m bald as f*ck.” Rio tries to give her some tough love, but I think Brendi K. is just too fragile for all this.
Side note: I’m gonna go ahead and call this right now: Top 3 will be Jeana, Coura, and Rio. In no particular order.
Tyra’s outfit is whack. But not as whack as Brendi K.’s outfit. She’s basically wearing a scarf as a crop top(?). Tyra opens judging by telling Jeana how much she inspired Law and Drew at the salon. They both want to share their major insecurities with the world. Law comes out without his wig and talks about his weight struggles and how he’s always used clothing and hair to compensate. Drew, who has vitiligo, comes out without makeup on his face for the first time and talks about his insecurities because of his skin condition. It’s an emotional moment, and you can almost feel Jeana becoming this strong role model as she’s watching.
Who was #nextlevelfierce and who was blah?
Jeana’s up first, and Law says he was completely blown away by her performance.
Liberty surprises everyone. Tyra said, “Who the hell was that?” after watching her video. Law said, “I think this red hair just lit a fire in your crotch.” God, I love him.
Rio was awesome, and Law said he couldn’t take his eyes off her face.
Christina was meh, as usual. Ashley said, “You’re a little bit one dimensional.”
Coura took some risks in her video, and Tyra says she loves the big moments, but thinks her soft moments were boring.
Shanice was still in a funk. Law said her performance was “very one-note. But your personality is too.” Ouchies.
Khrystyana – Tyra didn’t like her cuts. She said it wasn’t edgy enough, and she wants her to push past “safe.”
Brendi K. walks up feeling all insecure, but the judges said her cuts were beautiful and she owned it in the video.
Kyla does really well. Ashley said, “You could have a makeup campaign tomorrow.” Law says she’s the most modelesque girl there.
Sandra was meh. Judges thought it was boring. Because let’s face it, Sandra is boring.
Rhiyan moves her body well but has trouble giving different faces.
Erin werked it but like it was 1996.
Liz was Liz. Tyra said she needs a neck “real bad” but that the video gave her chills.
Ivana was…rough. Drew said, “It’s like a woman pretending to be a model.”
While the judges deliberate, we get some weird “backstage” footage of a heated fight between Brendi K. and Liz. Liz called Brendi K.’s family “crazy” during it, and Brendi got suuuuper pissed. Then this part just ends and that’s it. I’m assuming this is going to come back next week?
Call out order – best performance to worst:
Jeana (Should have been first, IMO.)
Bottom 2: Shanice and Ivana. Tyra tells them they’re both there because they can’t see their own beauty the way the judges do. She thinks one of them wants to be there more than the other, so... The girl. Who is still in the running. Toward becoming America’s. Next. Top. Model. Is. Shanice.
I’m expecting some dramaaaaa next week between Liz and Brendi K., as well Kyla and Liberty. There’s been a lot of foreshadowing regarding their stark political differences and Kyla’s activism. It’s a matter of time before this blows up.
Yours in #nextlevelfierceness,
